MESSAGES FROM THE WEBMASTER

.......
Posted 4-16-07
I am very happy to say that all of my sites are now on their own dedicated server. As of 3-21-07, the Subic Bay site will now have unlimited actions for unlimited growth for the years to come. These are a few of the actions that we can now expect.
Unlimited uploads of photos, stories and added sections.
In
the past, the servers that were used for this site was limited,
to first 300mg, then 1g, 3g and then 15g. The site would grow up,
to and over, every time. NOW, the site has unlimited space to
grow in any size over the life of the site. This is why you will
see the "Photos of 1999" being redone. Sizing of photos
on the site (which mean's, size of information which can fill up
a hard drive faster) was critical, so the photos, which were many
in that section, were sized small to keep that info size down. At
the time of the site creation most people were looking at all
sites at 800 X 600. That is not the case anymore. So now, that
section, and all photos in the future will be sized to fit your
whole screen for better detail and viewing, In other words, this
size limitation has been eliminated, therefore, I will be
re-scanning the photos to a large size in the "Photos of
1999".
Unlimited information transfer.
In
the past, people would visit the site, like what they see and
pass the site on to all their friends. Before you knew it, there
were 7000 Marines and Sailors visiting the site each week. When
the Filipinos realized that the site existed, those that could
access the web would do so, and do so for all those that
couldn't. Before you knew it, info being transferred from the
server to those that viewed was enormous. All servers have a
limit to information transfer and if you go over that limit
additional cost would be added. I was also using a server in the
past that was owned by a good friend and he would keep changing
the site over to other server. This was do to the fact that this
site, having so much traffic, would literarily slow down the
commercial sites that were shared on the same server that this
site was on. Here he was doing me all these favors and my site
was messing with his pay customers. NOT GOOD! So now that the
site is on it's own server, information transfer is unlimited and
if the site seems to slow a little, you will know that your
buddies are out there on the site with you. If the info transfer
exceeds it's operating limits, I will just have more hard drives
added to the machine.
There are many other benefits
to this site having its own server, but the two mentioned above
are the most beneficial of them all. I thought I would share this
with you so that you could better understand the obstacles I have
gone through over time and how we will all benefit from the move
we have now made.
Now, let us speak about the past neglect of the site.
I'm
sure that it seems I have gotten bored with the site and moved on
to bigger and better things. That's because it did look that way.
The fact of the matter is that I started a new business and
worked to get it up to speed over the last two (plus) years. I'm
glad to say that it's now doing fine and running on its own,
which now gives me the time to get back to my hobbies. Even
though I'm dedicated to my sites and those that view them, I must
priorities everything within my life and look at these sites as a
hobby when choosing between that and feeding the family. Besides,
this new business is what made the move to a dedicated server
possible.
So what is next?
Well,
I'll tell you. It's time to get this site updated. Over the many
years I have received tons of photos and stories. Those that have
sent them have probably wondered if they would ever show up on
the site. If there is one thing about me, I never let anyone's
time go to waste because I know how available my time is, being
the type that challenges myself with more than I can handle. So
be assured that, if you were one that sent me ANYTHING, I have it
on disk and will be going through them all one by one, adding it
to the site. There is so much stored that it should easily double
to triple the size of the site, as it is today, when completed.
This will also consist of re-categorizing the site and giving it
a new look, for your eye balls viewing pleasure.
Other things that are in the works?
The
artifacts of the museum is growing beyond belief. Those of you
that have donated to the museum... I thanks you! Other sources
have helped in the growth of the museum as well. There are well
over 5000 pieces of artifacts inventoried and close to a 1000
pieces of written documents and newspapers filed. Keep them
coming. With this new server, we may be able to post all the
written documents that I have within the site in the future. Will
need to purchase a newspaper size scanner to do so, however. This
will be a future purchase plan.
Also looking into future annual reunions. There has been a lot of feedback on this idea. It seems that "within the states" reunions are the most popular to those that wish to attend. I will keep you updated on this though the site.
Well folks, thanks again for all that you do.
I
hope that all which I wrote has helped you out in understanding
where the site stands and of its future. When you all have taken
the time and effort to make this site better and share with those
who enjoy the flashback that this site gives, it's the least I
can do. Remember, Subic Bay Naval Base will always exist, as long
as we never forget.

OTHER PLANS BEING MADE FOR THIS SITE
Also, due to many plans that are already scheduled for this year, the "Olongapo - Then and Now" section of the site will be opening at a later date. As in mid "2008". It will consist of every building that existed within the major streets, side streets and party places of Olongapo. There will be a clickable map that will access you to each building and will allow you to see the beginning of that location to the point it is today, as well as everything in between. Memorabilia from that location will be also added to each location.
